Post-Festival Party!

geek partying

If standing in a midnight line at WalMart a week ago made you question your allegiance to Geek Culture, this party has all the Good Stuff (helpfully highlighted in bold) to make you feel proud again:

Thursday, April 7th
8:00pm - Midnight
FLASHFORWARD POST-FESTIVAL PARTY
Sponsored by Flashforward and Metaliq, Inc.
744 Alabama Street, Suite 200
(between 19th and 20th Streets) Second Floor
Flashforward Badge Required at the Door

Following the Flash® Film Festival, catch a shuttle bus from the Herbst Theatre down to the lively SOMA (South of Market) district where the traditional Post-Festival Party is being held in the 10,000 square foot warehouse loft of Metaliq.

There you will find drinks, (free beer and wine), dancing, videogaming, prizes, plus plenty of music and party mingling with other Flashforward conference attendees.

A videogaming tournament begins promptly at 9pm, followed by Meet the Festival Winners at 10pm, and a bop-til-you drop Dance Contest at 11pm.

Shuttle buses run continually between the Herbst Theatre, Holiday Inn on Market (50 8th Street, just south of Market) and Metaliq in SOMA, which is jam-packed with inexpensive ethnic restaurants if you want to catch a bite before or after the party. (Last bus leaves Metaliq at midnight).

If you get lost or need directions call Metaliq at 415.642.3332.

A party not to be missed! Free entry for anyone holding a Flashforward badge. Guests of Flashforward attendees are admitted for $10 at the door.

We hear you scoffing: “Scoff! All the good stuff? I think not!”

And to this we say: although not listed above, we heard a rumor that the party will have an Anime theme. And go-go dancers.

Who’s scoffing now?

(Let’s see how long I get until my brother makes me take down that picture…)

Storm the House

Storm The House thumbnail

Gee thanks Kotaku — like our plate wasn’t already full enough with Lumines, now we’re addicted to Storm the House too. We’ll be lucky if the film festival ever gets finished. (Kidding, boss!)

Since you weren’t going to get any work done today anyway, check out this game. Be sure to read the instructions, not only because otherwise you’ll run out of ammo after your first three kills, but also because they’re hilarious. Here’s an excerpt:

you are a sniper on the hill or something… you are an alien with a laser maybe? well, that wouldn’t make sense since your wife and kids are apparently in the stronghold… well, whatever. the point is that you’re a dude that shoots death at stick men with your mouse.

Did you see South Park last night? This game actually reminds us a bit of the “Heaven vs Hell” PSP game Kenny was so good at.

Which leads us to ask: would someone please reassure us that a Flash player for the PSP is in the works, so we can put games like “Storm the House” on the ol’ Memory Stick and take them with us? Be sure you hassle everyone you see at Flashforward with a Macromedia badge until they give you the right answer! (Again, kidding! Be polite as you beg.)

If the internet is able to raise over three million dollars to rescue a mediocre TV show (which we’ve watched every episode of, just FYI) what would keep us from passing the hat to fund development of a Flash player for the PSP? How about $40-$50 per user — what you’d spend on a single pre-packaged game would open up the world of free online Flash games. We’re in! Who’s with us?!

By the way, in case you couldn’t tell, this is the Official Geek Zeitgeist Post Of The Week. Tell us how lame we are in the comments…

Win a Flashforward2006 pass

Thursday, March 31st, 2005

If you’re on our mailing list you saw this already, but here it is again just in case you didn’t know:

INTRONETWORKS–WIN A FREE FLASHFORWARD2006 PASS!
Every registered conference attendee can sign-up for the Flashforward introNetwork, which gives Flashforward2005 registrants exclusive access to anyone attending the conference, as well as Flashforward alumni who have attended conferences in the past. This powerful networking tool helps you (before, during and after the event) to: find attendees with similar interests, set up face-to-face meetings or job hunt. Join the Flashforward introNetwork today and participate in the drawing for a free pass to next year’s event.

We told you about the introNetwork already, but just to recap quickly: If you’re a registered attendee of this or any previous Flashforward conference, you should have already received a welcome and instruction email for joining the introNetwork. If you did not, let us know and we’ll get you set up.

And even if you’re ‘meh’ about the whole ‘free pass’ idea, how can you resist the chance to see teeny tiny pictures of my kid AND my dog AND my cars?! I’d post them here too but that would take away your incentive to use intro, so… yeah.

backstage snapshot

Have you seen The Gates: An Experiment in Collective Memory on Flickr.com?

All that pretty orange fabric got us thinking: why not use the same tools to perform our own collective memory experiment?

So we made a Flashforward tag and a Flashforward group on Flickr.

Here’s the idea: we’re going to have 1000 or so of the most tech-savvy, camera-happy people on the planet in the same place for three days. Why hoard all those snaps? If you’ve got your own blog or website you’ll be posting to, tell us where to find it and we’ll post the link. If you don’t have your own picture space, or if you already use flickr for moblogging or other ephemeral purposes, tag your images with ‘flashforward’ and we’ll all be able to find them. If you need a forum to chat, gripe, make dinner plans, whatever — feel free to use the flashforward group forum to do so.

Will anyone bother? We’ll see — that’s why we’re calling it an experiment. We’ll be adding images throughout the conference, and we hope you will too.

No need to limit yourself to images from the upcoming conference either; feel free to load up any old conference pictures swimming around your hard drive as well. (That’s what we just did, at which time we remembered that we always forget to take pictures. Oh well, it’s pretty dark backstage anyway.)

Festival! Contest!

award arrows

What’s that? So excited about the 2005 San Francisco Flash® Film Festival that you can hardly contain yourself? Well here’s an update to keep you occupied for the next nine days…

  • With People’s Choice voting closed since last Friday, we’re about done counting votes, and can give you some stats: 1300 nominations received; 30 judges; 16 categories; 60 finalists; over 10,000 People’s Choice votes cast; only 16 winners!
  • The Orange Rubber strip-mines in Holland are working triple shifts to extract sufficient quantities of the rare (and only slightly radioactive) material we cast into our famous award statues
  • The festival after-party is coming together very nicely. We’ll post details soon, but in our humble opinion this will be the best party ever, even better than those glory days when Macromedia and Adobe fought for your love with things like Run DMC and Parliament concerts. How can we possibly top that? Stay tuned to find out…
  • Start keeping a list of your favorite sites that didn’t make the cut this time around, because nominations will re-open on April 8 for the 2005 New York festival. There will be a very short nomination period this time around, so don’t delay!

One more thing: it’s time for a contest! Go back and finish checking out the finalists; post your projected winners in the comments and whoever guesses closest will win… something. We’ll think of something!
