Kiwi

Last week, Adobe launched the Kiwi Project, “focused on enabling developers to build read/write web components in Flex and Apollo”. So far, at least, that appears to mean two things: maintaining an information-rich blog, and building and deconstructing proof-of-concept applications as a means of sharing code, practices and ideas with the community.

The first of these is NoteTag, a tool for taking notes during meetings with a unique feature: the ability to flag and assign action items on the fly. See the NoteTag Wiki for much more information and to get your hands on the code.

It’s great to see Adobe continue to nurture the Flash community in ways like this, and we’re excited to see what’s next from the Kiwi project!

During Flashforward2006 Seattle, we were able to convince several of our speakers to sit down in front of a camera and talk a little bit about their sessions and other Flash community subjects. If you were one of those speakers, you’ve probably been wondering: what ever happened to that video?

The answer is: we just posted it to our new video interviews page!

Have a look and let us know what you think. We’ll be podcasting these as well once we work out a few more details, and adding more videos as soon as they’re ready. Enjoy!

Briefly: Brevity

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

Keith Peters has been posting updates about a tool he’s building called Brevity. What’s that? Keith says:

“Brevity is a new language, based around ActionScript 3.0. It provides a very simple syntax to create ActionScript 3 based SWFs. Think “Processing for Flash”. In fact, Brevity is very much inspired by Processing.”

Did you get goose-bumps when you read that? Then keep an eye on this project — there’s no public release yet but lots of info and a couple demos are online, with more happening almost daily.

Adobe Developer Week

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

Quick reminder for anyone who didn’t hear about it or forgot to register: Adobe Developer Week (June 12-16, 2006) will offer free, online (Breeze) sessions on all aspects of the Adobe engagement platform. This includes several sessions about Flex, ActionScript 3, and an intriguing one called “Building Killer Desktop RIAs: Adobe’s Next Generation Technology” which we suspect is a long way of saying “Apollo.”

But you do need to pre-register, so do it now before you forget again! (It’s a good opportunity to get the basics under your belt before Flashforward Austin so you can attend more of the advanced sessions…)

Austin City Limits announces lineup

Austin City Limits crowds

We’ve made this point before, but in case you hadn’t yet realized, the Austin City Limits music festival will be taking place September 15-17, 2006 — coincidentally right after Flashforward Austin, which will be September 11-14.

In other words, after you spend four days basking in the company of like-minded digital artists, you can stay the weekend and bask in the company of like-minded music fans. That’s a full week of basking!

ACL announced their artist lineup a couple days ago and… seriously, if you don’t see a few of your favorite bands on that list, we don’t know you as well as we thought we did. (Or, more likely, those ARE your favorite bands and you just don’t know it yet.)

Tickets are still available for both Flashforward and Austin City Limits, so stick around for the concerts! How much work were you going to get done on Friday anyway?
