Thunder lightning and ridiculously large drinks.

August 20th, 2008

The flash conference started Tuesday night at the Gallery which included a video series on Passion as well as print art. We shortly ended up at the Tonga room where Sanflashcisco, San Francisco’s Flash user group, was hosting a get together.

It was great to meet with friends and speakers for some fun all enhanced by the indoor thunderstorms and rain, a la grocery store produce aisle fashion.

I am not sure if it was the thunder and lightning or the ridiculously large drinks served in a bowl that caused confusion but I could have sworn some one said the Gallery included an interactive piece where a guy was wearing a monitor on his head. Did anyone see that?

Flashforward Film Festival Creates Magic with Jamy Ian Swiss

August 6th, 2008

Flashforward Film Festival welcomes Jamy Ian Swiss, one of the world’s top sleight-of-hand performers, as Master of Ceremonies awarding Big Orange Rubber Arrows on August 21st at the Nob Hill Masonic Center. This event, which is part of the Flashforward Conference, will be attended by those registered for the conference but is also open to nonconference guests wishing to purchase tickets. Eleven Big Orange Rubber Arrows will be awarded in ten categories with an additional award for the Peoples Choice, chosen through online voting. To view the finalists or vote in the Peoples Choice visit www.flashforwardconference.com/finalists.

Jamy Ian Swiss is known for presenting “Magical Metaphors” talks on creativity. He is both an author and essayist, of a collection of essays entitled Shattering Illusions and a book entitled The Art of Magic, the companion to a PBS documentary of the same title. Like the award-winning Flash creators Swiss is known for integrating his work with content.

“Swiss brings a strong belief in craft and technique to the creation of magic. He shares his accumulated knowledge with others and believes in learning through practice and by understanding tradition,” said Beau Ambur, CEO Metaliq and Flashforward Conference and Film Festival. “Everything Jamy does looks natural although you know it’s a trick. I feel the same about truly great Flash work—I know it’s achievable but I don’t know how they did it!”

Jamy Ian Swiss is universally considered one of the world’s top sleight- of-hand performers, famous to magicians for his subtlety, skill and depth of understanding of magic’s history. Swiss was a writer and magic designer for Penn & Teller and has appeared on a number of television programs in the United States, Europe, and Japan, including on The Today Show, CBS’s 48 Hours, Comedy Central, CNN, PBS Nova and the PBS documentary, The Art of Magic. He is a co-producer of New York City’s longest-running Off-Broadway magic show, Monday Night Magic.

The Flashforward Film Festival is open to all Flashforward Conference attendees as well as the general public. For those not attending the conference who wish to join the August 21st celebration, Film Festival tickets are available for $65 and Film Festival + After Party tickets for $100. Purchase them at https://store.flashforwardconference.com. The Film Festival and Awards Ceremony take place in the Main Auditorium at the Masonic Center beginning at 7:30pm. The After Party takes place at Ruby Skye featuring performances by Lyrics Born and DJ Solomon.
